Description
♂♂
Medium size butterfly. Fw: 19-22 mm.
Ups: variable pale yellow to fulvous gc, dark brown markings.
Upf: broad sex-brand, white-pupilled apical ocellus.
Uph: series of postdiscal ocelli in pale yellow to fulvous spots in s2, s3, s4 and sometimes s5.
Unf: similar.
Unh: varying yellow brown gc, darker marginal area enclosing small white spots.

Similar species
None.

Life cycle
Adults: continuous generations from April to November.
Egg: 5-12 days.
Caterpillar: partially overwintering as half-grown larva, otherwise short stage (17-30 days)
Pupa: partially overwintering (26-31 weeks), otherwise short stage (10-28 days)

Habitat
Pararge aegeria inhabits shady places in gardens, parks and all types of woodland from lowland up to the timberline, rarely above 1600 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density can be high.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed mainly on Dactylis glomerata, Deschampsia cespitosa, Festuca gigantea, Melica nutans, M. uniflora, Poa annua, P. bulbosa, P. nemoralis, P. pratensis and P. trivialis, also mentioned are Agrostis gigantea, A. stolonifera, Arrhenatherum elatius, Avena sterilis, Brachypodium pinnatum, B. sylvaticum, Calamagrostis epigejos, Carex sylvatica, Cynodon dactylon, Elymus caninus, E. repens, Festuca sp., Glyceria fluitans, Holcus lanatus, L. perenne, Molinia caerulea and Schoenus nigricans.
Butterflies feed on a variety of flowers, overripe fruit and often on Rubus.

Distribution
Albania: widespread.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA* - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.

Conservation status
Pararge aegeria is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
