Description
♂♂
Medium size butterfly. Fw: 19-21 mm.
Ups: bright yellow gc.
Upf: black spot in orange apical area, apex and marginal border grey.
Unf: yellow apical area.
Unh: yellow with greenish-grey markings, resembling those of A. cardamines.
♀♀
Slightly larger.
Ups: whitish gc.
Upf: no orange apical patch.
Unf: yellow apical area.
Unh: yellow with greenish-grey markings, resembling those of A. cardamines.

Similar species

Anthocharis cardamines
Size: similar size or slightly larger.
Upf: proximal, not dusted orange tip.
Uph: ♂ white gc, ♀ white gc.
Unf: ♀ black discal spot not reaching costa.
Unh: greenish gc.
Unh: mosaic of small white spots.

Anthocharis gruneri
Size: smaller.
Upf: proximal, dusted orange tip + costa.
Uph: ♂ pale yellowish gc, ♀ white gc.
Unf: ♀ bigger discal spot reaching the costa.
Unh: greenish gc.
Unh: regular white dots.

 

 

 

Life cycle
Adults: single generation from March to May (depending on altitude)
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: feeding in spring.
Pupa: overwintering, long pupal stage.

Habitat
Anthocharis damone inhabits open, flowery rocky slopes and embankements up to 1100 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirment moderate, population density can be high, nomadic.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Isatis tinctoria, also mentioned is Aethionema saxatile.
Butterflies feed on a diversity of flowers.

Distribution
Albania: very local in southern Albania (more research needed)
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT* - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Middle East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.

Conservation status
Anthocharis damone is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NT.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
