Description
♂♂
Small butterfly. Fw: 16-17 mm.
Hw: margin sharply angled at v8.
Ups: orange gc, large black markings, black veins, series of oval postdsical spots.
Unh: violet-redbrownish gc with pale markings, series of dark reddish-brown-ringed postdiscal ocelli.
♀♀
Slightly larger.
Ups: slightly paler orange gc, otherwise similar.
Hw: margin sharply angled at v8.
Unh: similar as ♂♂.

Similar species

Boloria euphrosyne
Size:larger Boloria.
Unh: sandy-red gc, yellow discal band.
Unh: prominent silvery marginal spots.

Boloria graeca
Size:slightly larger Boloria.
Unf: well marked, small black spots.
Unh: yellowish-red gc.
Unh: prominent pupilled pd spots.

Boloria pales
Size:slightly larger Boloria.
Unf: poorly marked, small black spots.

Size:largest Boloria.

Life cycle
Adults: two to three generations depending on altitude from April to September.
Egg: 5-8 days.
Caterpillar: overwintering as L3 larva in the litter layer.
Pupa: 10-16 days.

Habitat
Boloria dia inhabits grasslands with scatttered bushes or light woodland from 600 up to 1600 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density can be high, nomadic.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Viola arvensis, V. canina, V. hirta, V. odorata, V. reichenbachiana, V. riviniana and V. tricolor, also mentioned are Prunella vulgaris, Potentilla reptans and Rubus idaeus.
Butterflies feed on all kind of flowers in the grass vegetation.

Distribution
Albania: local in the mountains.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB* - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE* - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.

Conservation status
Boloria dia is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
