Description
♂♂
Large butterfly. Fw: 38-41 mm.
Ups: rich dark brown gc.
Upf: wide yellow marginal border and small yellow-brown postdiscal spots.
Uph: black edged, yellow marginal border, proximal blue spots from s1c to s4.
Uns: basal area with pattern of burgundy coloured and white outlined spots and striped.

None.

Life cycle
Adults: two generations, spring generation (less numerous) from April to June and summer generation from August to October.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: overwintering.
Pupa: short stage.

Habitat
Charaxes jasius inhabits mainly coastal maquis on bushy slopes with abundant Arbutus unedo from lowland up to 1000 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement, population density can be high.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed mainly on Arbutus unedo, also mentioned are Arbutus andrachne, Citrus sp., Laurus nobilis and Prunus persica.
Butterflies feed on feed on liquid from rotten fruit, dung and carrion.

Albania: local.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP* - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Coastal ranges of Asia Minor and Near East.

Conservation status
Charaxes jasius is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: LC.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
