Description
♂♂
Medium size butterfly. Fw: 20-22 mm.
Upf: dark brown gc, extended orange-red lanceolate spots enclosing white-pupiled ocelli in s2, s4 and s5 (sometimes additional are present) on upf and s1 to s5 on uph.
Uns: same markings, pale whitish yellow lanceolate spots long.

Similar size.
Ups: paler brown gc, posdiscal markings slightly paler.
Uns: yellowish-brown gc, posdiscal marking often pale yellow.

Other Erebia.
Upf: no orange lanceolate, oval pd spots.
Unh: no paler, yellowish lanceolate, ovall pd spots.
Life cycle
Adults: single generation from June to July.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: overwintering as half-grown larva.
Pupa: short stage.
Habitat
Erebia alberganus inhabits alpine moist meadows with abundant flowers from 1000 up to 2000 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density can be high.
Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Festuca ovina, Anthoxanthum odoratum and Poa annua.
Butterflies feed on a large variety of flowers.
Distribution
Albania: one record from the Northern Albanian Alps (more research needed) and at the limit of its distribution range in the Balkan peninsula.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB* - IT - ALP - BAL* - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Not at all present in Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.
Conservation status
Erebia alberganus is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: NA.
