Description
♂♂
Small butterfly. Fw: 17-21 mm.
Ups: white gc with faint yellowish flush.
Upf:
grey apical marking (spring generation), smaller black apical mark (summer generation)
Unh: uniform green-grey suffusion except at the base (spring generation), yellow suffusion without dark suffusion (summer generation)
Antennal club: orange-brown.
♀♀
Similar size.
Upf: apical marking very pale (spring generation) or absent (summer generation)
Otherwise identical to ♂♂.
Similar species
Life cycle
Adults: two to three generations (at low altitude) from April to September.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: short stage, up to 5 weeks.
Pupa: 2 weeks and a long stage when overwintering.
Habitat
Leptidea duponcheli inhabits warm, sunny, scrub rich open wooded rocky areas at moderate altitudes up to 1200 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement low, population density sometimes high.
Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Onobrychis sp., Lathyrus sp. and Lotus sp, also mentioned are Medicago sativa falcata and Vicia sp.
Butteflies feed on a variety of low flowers.
Distribution
Albania: local in the mountains.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT* - ALP* - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.
Conservation status
Leptidea duponcheli is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: VU B1.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
