Description
♂♂
Small butterfly. Fw: 15-17 mm.
Ups: gleaming pale blue, small marginal line slightly extending along veins.
Uns: light grey to olive gc, usual markings.
Unf: no cell -spot, wide white margin, vestigial antemarginal markings.
Unh: orange triangular submarginal lunules with faint, vestigial or absent black edging.
♀♀
Similar or slightly smaller.
Ups: brown gc, blue basal suffusion often present, orange submarginal lunules reduced or absent on fw, always present on hw.
Uns: brown gc, similar but stronger markings as ♂♂.

Similar species
Check other Polyommatus.

Typical for Polyommatus dorylas are:
Unh: no black edges on internal side of orange sm lunules.
Unf and unh: white marginal border internally of narrow black marginal line.
Unf: no cell-spot.
Upf and uph: ♀♀ no or inconspicuous black dots in orange sm band.


Life cycle
Adults: single generation from May to September depending on altitude.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: overwintering.
Pupa: short stage.

Habitat
Polyommatus dorylas inhabits warm, flowery limestone slopes from 500 up to 2000 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density can be high, females rarely observed.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed mainly on Anthyllis vulneraria, also mentioned are Anthyllis montana, Astragalus glycyphyllos and Thymus serpyllum.
Butterflies are feeding on a variety of available flowers in the habitat.

Distribution
Albania: widespread in the mountains.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Transcaucasia and Caucasus.

Conservation status
Polyommatus dorylas is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: LC.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
