Note
The species has been recorded in NMK, RKS and GR. The foodplant, Salvia ringens, is easily distinguished by the deep blue and large flowers.
In Albania, the foodplant has been recorded from the Prespa NP, near Librazhd and the Hotolishti tributary, between Shkopet to Bulqizë and from the Hasi district.
The species can be searched from mid April till early June, a partial second generation is rarely observed in summer.

Description
♂♂
Small butterfly. Fw: 13-15 mm.
Ups: dark blue gc, variable wide diffuse dark marginal border, chequered fringes.
Upf: discal spot present.
Uph: orange submarginal lunules in s1c, s2 and s3, black antemarginal spots.
Uns: light grey gc, prominent black markings.
Unh: band of orange red submarginal lunules in s6 and s7 with black dots.
♀♀
Slightly larger.
Ups: basal dark blue gc, largely black suffused in other parts of the wing.
Uph: larger orange submarginal lunules in s1c, s2 and s3, black antemarginal spots.
Unh: band of orange red submarginal lunules extending to s6 and s7 with black dots.

Similar species

Pseudophilotes vicrama

Size: smaller Pseudophilotes.
Upf: light blue gc.
Upf: chequered fringes.
Uph: no orange sm lunules.
Unf: strong black antemarginal spots.
Unf: chequered fringes.
Unh: orange sm lunules from s1b to s5.

 

 

 



Life cycle
Adults: single generation from end-April to June, a partial second generation is rare.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: 6-7 weeks.
Pupa: overwintering.

Habitat
Pseudophilotes bavius inhabits warm, rocky grasslands with sparse vegetation with abundant Salvia from 500 up to 1300 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density moderate.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Salvia ringens, Romanian and NE Bulgarian populations feed on Salvia nutans.
Spatial requirement modest, population density moderate.

Distribution
Albania: never recorded.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU*
Asia Minor, Syria and further east.

Conservation status
Pseudophilotes bavius is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NA.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
