Description

Large butterfly. Fw: 28-31 mm.
Upc: black gc.
Upf: red band and white apical markings.
Uph: red marginal border.
Unh: dark brown with dark markings.
♀♀
Sligthly larger, similar markings.

Similar species
None.

Life cycle
Adults: early spring after overwintering, one to two generations from June to November.
Egg: 4-6 days.
Caterpillar: 18-29 days.
Pupa: 9-15 days.

Habitat
Vanessa atalanta inhabits a large variety of habitats from gardens, parks to forests from lowland up to 2100 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement great, population density in late summer can be high, yearly migrating.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Urtica dioica, U. urens, U. membranacea, U. pilulifera, U. dubia, Humulus lupulus and Parietaria officinalis.
Butterflies feed on a large variety of flowers, sap of wounded trees and rotten fruit, mud-puddling.

Distribution
Albania: widespread.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.

Conservation status
Vanessa atalanta is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
