Description

Small butterfly. Fw: 14-15 mm.
Ups: dark brown-black gc, absent or inconspicuous white marginal dots.
Upf: two irregular black bands, postdiscal band mixed with grey.
Uph: black without markings.
Uns: black gc, unf with small white apical dots.
♀♀
Often larger.
Ups: paler gc.

Life cycle
Adults: single generation with partial second generation or two full generations depending on local climate conditions, from May to August.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: probably hibernating.
Pupa: a longer pupation after hibernation of the caterpillar, shorter for the summer generation.
Habitat
Erynnis marloyi inhabits large, hot grasslands in mountainous, rocky areas. Mostly on calcareous soils in gullies up to 1500 m a.s.l.
Males are hilltopping. Females staying lower on the slopes.
Spatial requirement modest, population density modest.
Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Prunus cocomilia, P. spinosa and Pyrus amygdaliformis.
Butterflies feed on a variety of low flowers.
Distribution
Albania: local and at the northern limit of its distribution range in the Balkan peninsula.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East, Caucasus, Transcaucasia and further east.
Conservation status
Erynnis marloyi is not endangered, at the northern limit of its European range in the Balkan peninsula.
Albanian Red List: VU.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
