Description

Large butterfly. Fw: 28-34.
Ups: white gc with blackish veins. Worn specimens sometimes translucent.
Uns: similar.
♀♀
Larger.
Upf: semi-transparent, veins brownish. Worn specimens sometimes translucent.
Uph: thinly scaled.

Life cycle
Adults: single generation from April to July, short life span (2 weeks)
Egg: 12-23 days.
Caterpillar: early stages in a webbed shelter, overwintering as half-grown larva in a nest with 10-40 other larvae, feeding again in early spring.
Pupa: 12-19 days.

Habitat
Aporia crataegi inhabits warm, rough areas with bushes, sometimes in orchards from lowland up to 1700 m a.s.l., nomadic specimens even higher.
Spatial requirment moderate, population density can be high, nomadic, some years migrating over long distances.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on different trees and scrubs: Crataegus sp., Prunus sp. and Pyrus sp., also mentioned are Malus sp., Sorbus sp., Amygdalus sp. and Rosa sp.
Butterflies feed on a variety of low flowers, spending little time foraging.

Distribution
Albania: widespread.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.

Conservation status
Aporia crataegi is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.

IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
