Description

Medium size butterfly. Fw: 17-20 mm.
Ups: yellow-buff gc, continuous black marginal border on upf and uph.
Unh: s4 base yellow-buff, irregular postdiscal spots and ocelli.
♀♀
Slightly larger.
Ups: often fuscous suffusion, violet sheen (fresh specimens)
Similar species
Life cycle
Adults: single generation from the second half of June to July.
Egg: overwintering with young larva in the chorion.
Caterpillar: 8 weeks.
Pupa: 10-18 days.
Habitat
Brenthis ino inhabits wet flowery meadows with scattered shrubs often near running water or lakes from 1200 up to 1600 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density can be high.
Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Filipendula ulmaria and F. vulgaris, also mentioned are Aruncus dioicus, Rubus sp. and Sanguisorba sp.
Butterflies feed on a variety of flowers.
Distribution
Albania: very local (more research needed) and at the southern limit of its distribution range in the Balkan peninsula.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT* - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor*, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.
Conservation status
Brenthis ino is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
