Description
♂♂
Small to medium size butterfly. Fw: 19-21 mm.
Ups: dark brown gc, metallic greenish reflections.
Upf: three or more submarginal ocelli in the submarginal band along the outer margin (not only at the apex), short tawny band partly envading cell.
Uns: paler grey gc, poorly contrasted.
Unf: wide marginal band.
Unh: weak discal band, poorly contrasted.
♀♀
Slightly larger.
Ups: paler brown gc, more ocelli and larger postdiscal bands.
Uns: paler yellowish gc.

Similar species

Erebia are variable on ups and uns for most of the characters: number of ocelli, postdiscal band, fringes, ... and some extreme cases are figured.
Identification is best done by combining different characters.

Erebia cassioides
Size:slightly smaller Erebia.
Flying at higher altitude, can be syntopic > 2000 m a.s.l.
Later but overlapping flight time: fresh E. cassioides with worn E. ottomana.

Ups: dark brown gc (fresh specimens)
Upf: two white-pupiled circular sm ocelli (only apical)
Upf: orange-red sm band.
Upf: short discontinuous orange-red sm band.
Unf: two white-pupiled circular sm ocelli (only apical)
Unf: dark brownish gc.
Unh:♂♂ discal band slight bluish-grey gc.
Unh: ♀♀ discal band grey gc.
Unh:  no or very small black spots in pd band.



Identification can be difficult.
Identification based on genitalia is recommended in case of doubt.

Life cycle
Adults: single generation from June to August.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: overwintering.
Pupa: short stage.

Habitat
Erebia ottomana inhabits subalpine and alpine meadows from 1200 m up to 2500 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density often high.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Festuca nigrescens, F. ovina, F. paniculata, F. rubra and Nardus stricta.
Butterflies feed on a large variety of flowers.

Distribution
Albania: loal in mountain areas (more research needed)
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - Massif Central (France) - IT* - ALP* - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor.

Conservation status
Erebia ottomana is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
