Description
♂♂
Mid size butterfly. Fw: 20-25 mm.
Ups: dusky brown gc.
Upf: dark striae in cell, dark postdiscal line, broad tawny postdiscal area enclosing black blind ocelli from s2 to s5.
Uph: small blind ocelli with faint (or absent) orange ring.
Unf: reddish-brown gc, greyish costa, blind ocelli.
Unh: silver-grey gc, outlined discal band.

Similar size.
Ups: paler brown gc, markings similar as ♂♂.
Unh: yellowish-grey gc, darker filled discal band.
Similar species
Other Erebia.
Upf: none with this pattern of blind ocelli in orange pd band.
Life cycle
Adults: single generation from June to mid-July.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: two years to develop, overwintering first year as small larva, second year as almost full-grown larva.
Pupa: short stage.
Habitat
Erebia pandrose inhabits alpine grasslands and scree slopes above the timberline from 1900 up to 2500 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density can be high.
Foodplants
Caterpillars feed mainly on Festuca ovina, F. violacea, Nardus stricta, Poa sp. and Sesleria caerulea.
Butterflies feed on the available flowers, often on Arnica sp.
Distribution
Albania: very local (more research needed) and at the southern limit of its distribution range in the Balkan peninsula.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO* - SLO* - SRB
Europe: IB* - IT* - ALP - BAL* - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU*
Not at all present in Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.
Conservation status
Erebia pandrose is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NT.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: NA.
