Description
♂♂
Medium size butterfly. Fw: 23-25 mm.
Ups: dark brown gc.
Upf:
postdiscal bands widest near the costa and tapering towards anal angle enclosing white-pupiled ocelli from s2 to s6.
Uph: three or four ocelli in postdiscal band.
Unh: very dark gc, grey irrorated and darker discal band.

Slightly larger.
Upf: paler orange-red postdiscal bands.
Unh: lighter gc and markings, better defined discal band.
Similar species
Other Erebia.
Upf: none with three aligned apical ocelli and upper margin of the orange pd band straight.
Life cycle
Adults: single generation from May to early July.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: overwintering as full-grown larva.
Pupa: short stage.
Habitat
Erebia triarius inhabits steep rocky areas between 1000 up to 2000 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density can be high.
Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Festuca ovina, Lolium sp., Poa alpina, P. pratensis and Stipa pennata.
Butterflies feed on a variety of flowers.
Distribution
Albania: very local in the Northern Albanian Alps (more research needed)
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT* - ALP - BAL* - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Not present at all in Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.
Conservation status
Erebia triarius is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: DD.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
