Description
♂♂
Large butterfly. Fw: 29-31 mm.
Fw: narrow.
Ups: brown gc.
Upf: distorted sex-brands in basal and discal area, large fulvous area, one apical ocellus in s5.
Uph: ocelli faintly showing through.
Unf: similar as upf.
Unh: series of white-pupilled and yellow-ringed ocelli, small in s4 and s5.

Larger.
Upf: pale costal and apical spots.
Uph: ocelli faintly showing through.
Unf: large orange postdiscal area.
Unh: more defined markings.

Kirinia climene
Size:smaller.
Upf: ♂♂ linear sex-brand.
Upf: ♂♂ straight vein.
Uph: ♂♂ conspicuous ocelli.
Uph: orange band enclosing the ocelli.
Unh: discal area poorly marked on both sides.
Unh: small white-pupilled sm ocelli.
Unh: single -ringed ocelli.














Life cycle
Adults: single generation from mid-May to the first half of August.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: overwintering.
Pupa: short stage.

Habitat
Kirinia roxelana inhabits rough ground with sparse grasses in dense shrubland and warm forests from lowland up to 1400 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement small, population density can be high.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Anthoxanthum odoratum, Lolium perenne, Milium effusum, Poa annua, P. pratensis and P. trivialis.
Butterflies almost never found feeding on flowers, observed on rotten fruit, often found sitting in low and well-shaded bushes, rarely flying unless disturbed.

Albania: local.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East and further east.

Conservation status
Kirinia roxelana is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
