Description

Medium size butterfly. Fw: 25-28 mm (first generation), 22-23 mm (summer generation)
Ups:
brown gc.
Upf: broad sex-brand, fulvous postdiscal area, large white-pupilled (sometimes two pupils) apical ocellus, sometimes small ocellus in s6.
Uph: discal area unmarked, fulvous-ringed, white-pupilled ocelli in s2, s3 and s4.
Unh: pale grey and slightly mottled gc, yellow-brown ringed postdiscal ocelli in s2 to s6.

Slightly larger.
Upf: wider and brighter fulvous area, apical ocelli similar to ♂♂.
Unh: similar to ♂♂.
Similar species
Life cycle
Adults: two generations from mid-April to September.
Egg: 5-12 days.
Caterpillar: overwintering as L3 larva, aestivating in summer as small larva.
Pupa: 10-24 days.
Habitat
Lasiommata maera inhabits dry, stony grasslands from lowland up to 2000 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement considerable, population density moderate.
Foodplants
Caterpillars feed mainly on Bromus erectus, Festuca ovina, F. rubra, Phleum pratense, Poa annua, P. bulbosa and P. pratensis, also mentioned are Agrostis capillaris, A. stolonifera,Brachypodium phoenicoides, B. pinnatum, B. erectus, B. sterilis, Calamagrostis arundinacea, C. epigejos, C. varia, Dactylis glomerata, Deschampsia flexuosa, Elymus repens, Glyceria fluitans, Holcus mollis, Hordelymus europaeus, Hordeum marinum, Hordeum murinum, Lolium sp., Melica nutans and Nardus stricta.
Butterflies feed on a large variety of flowers in the herb vegetation.

Albania: widespread in the mountains.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT - ALP - BAL - NWE* - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.
Conservation status
Lasiommata maera is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
