Description
♂♂
Medium size butterfly. Fw: 19-21 mm.
Ups: dark brown gc.
Upf: broad sex-brand, inconspicuous dark bars in cell, interrupted fulvous postdiscal area, large white-pupilled apical ocellus, sometimes small ocellus in s6.
Uph: dark curving wavy transverse discal line, fulvous-ringed and white-pupilled ocelli in s2, s3 and s4.
Unh: darker brown-grey and slightly mottled gc, yellow-orange ringed postdiscal ocelli in s2 to s6.
♀♀
Similar size.
Upf: wider and more continuous fulvous area, apical ocelli similar to ♂♂.
Unh: similar to ♂♂.

Similar species

Lasiommata maera
Size:larger Lasiommata.
Very variable ♂♂ and ♀♀.
Upf: brown gc in basal area.
Uph: no dark transverse discal line.





Lasiommata megera
Size:smaller Lasiommata.
Upf: orange gc in basal area.
Uph: narrow orange postdiscal band.










Life cycle
Adults: single generation from mid-May up to August depending on altitude.
Egg: short stage.
Caterpillar: long stage.
Pupa: overwintering.

Habitat
Lasiommata petropollitana inhabits open stony places in woodland of pine or spruce from 700 up to 2000 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement modest, population density moderate.

Foodplants
Caterpillars feed on Calamagrostis epigejos, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca ovina, F. rubra and Melica nutans.
Butterflies feed on a large variety of flowers.

Distribution
Albania: local in the mountains (more research needed)
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB* - IT* - ALP - BAL* - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU*
Asia Minor*, Transcaucasia and Caucasus.

Conservation status
Lasiommata petropollitana is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
