Description

Small butterfly. Fw: 11-14 mm. Smaller than Spialia phlomidis.
Upf: white postdiscal spots in a regular row, submarginal spots well defined often in a complete series.
Uph: submarginal spots well defined often in a complete series.
Unh: pale reddish-brown gc with equal ovale-round dots.

Slightly larger, otherwise similar markings.

Life cycle
Adults: two generations from April to September.
Egg: 1 week.
Caterpillar: full-grown larva is overwintering hidden under a withered leaf of the host plant.
Pupa: about 14 days.
Habitat
Spialia orbifer inhabits different rough grasslands with single shrubs and numerous flowering plants up to 1700 m a.s.l.
Spatial requirement low, population density can be high.
Foodplants
Caterpillar feed on Rosaceae: Sanguisorba minor, S. officinalis and Rubus idaeus.
Butterflies feed on a variety of flowers.

Albania: widespread.
Balkan: AL - BG - BIH - GR - HR - NMK - MNE - RKS - RO - SLO - SRB
Europe: IB - IT* - ALP - BAL - NWE - UK - SCA - EEU
Asia Minor, Near East, Transcaucasia, Caucasus and further east.
Conservation status
Spialia orbifer is not endangered.
Albanian Red List: NE.
IUCN Red List, category at the Mediterranean level: LC.
